Dr Wu was originally trained in clinical medicine in China and later graduated with a PhD from the School of Public Health of the University of Hong Kong. She is responsible for an introductory module in infectious diseases in the MPH curriculum. Dr Wu's research interest is infectious disease epidemiology mainly applying statistical modelling approaches to investigate epidemiological features, transmission dynamics and public health impact of infectious diseases.

Recently she has been working on transmission, disease burden and severity of infections attributable to human influenza and other common respiratory viruses, antimicrobial resistance, vaccine effectiveness of seasonal influenza vaccination, epidemiology and psycho-social impact of the newly emerged avian influenza A(H7N9) virus, and epidemiology of hand-foot mouth diseases particularly enterovirus serotype 71.
