About the speaker:
Dr Chan’s research aims to advance child health in underserved populations by using epidemiologic methods to study and develop evidence-based strategies. Her research has focused on reducing the three major causes of neonatal mortality – complications of prematurity, intrapartum-related complications, and infections - and delivering effective programs for newborn survival. She has led and evaluated newborn survival projects and trained health care workers on essential newborn care practices in Tanzania, India, and Indonesia. With Saving Newborn Lives, she is currently developing strategies to scale effective implementation of Kangaroo Mother Care for preterm newborns. Prior to joining Harvard, she was a NIH Clinical Research Scholar at Johns Hopkins where she collaborated with the International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research in Bangladesh (ICDDR, B) to estimate the risk of early-onset neonatal sepsis from maternal infections in Dhaka.
