Print

In a podcast on the "Public Health on Call" series by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health that aired on June 23, 2023, Dr Phyu Phyu Thin Zaw, Lecturer of the School of Public Health of the University of Hong Kong, recounted her experience of fleeing from Myanmar and presented the dilemma of public health.

Dr Thin Zaw called on higher education to develop mechanisms to help exiled scientists bridge their time in exile and maintain their scientific careers. She described how many who worked in Myanmar’s public health institutions and universities have become blacklisted and unable to continue their work safely without emigrating. However, once they emigrate it is difficult to maintain a career in public health.

The School has started a scholarship programme for MPH trainees from LMICs and has supported the integration of scientists from Myanmar into the research network in Hong Kong. To learn more, please visit https://www.mph.sph.hku.hk/scholarship
