Dr. Phyu Phyu Thin Zaw is a Lecturer at the School of Public Health in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong. She is a research scientist, epidemiologist and health systems specialist with 12 years of work experience in the government sector. Her research interests are equity, health and education policies, Southeast Asia health systems and policies, sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, poverty eradication, and human rights issues.

After receiving her MBBS degree from the University of Medicine (Mandalay), Phyu Phyu worked as a civil assistant surgeon for two years at a public hospital. In 2009 she became an active researcher at the Department of Medical Research (Upper Myanmar). She earned her PhD in Epidemiology from Prince of Songkla University, Thailand in 2013. In 2014, she became a WHO/HRP career development fellow (Visiting Scholar) at the Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center, Stanford University, USA and studied the current trends of Myanmar health policies, health care disparities across Southeast Asia as well as some specific reproductive health programs of the country. In 2017 she received a scholarship to study at the Blavatnik School of Government, Oxford University, UK completing a Master of Public Policy degree in 2018.

Prior to working for the University of Hong Kong, she worked as a national technical expert at Oxford Policy Management, UK. She was also as a Visiting Professor at Chiang Mai University’s School of Public Policy assisting the faculty in graduate teaching, conducting her own research, and holding seminars. She is also a public health and policy consultant giving technical advice to think tanks and non-governmental organisations.
