Biography

Dr June Leung relocated from Hong Kong to Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) in 2019, and is currently a public health physician at the National Public Health Service (Northern Region), Te Whatu Ora (Health New Zealand), where she is responsible for the alcohol portfolio. She is also a senior researcher at SHORE and Whariki Research Centre, Massey University, where her research focuses on global alcohol policy. After completing the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), she worked as a medical officer at the Department of Health in Hong Kong and then at the HKU School of Public Health, where she was Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of the Master of Public Health (MPH) programme.

 

About the Seminar

In this seminar, Dr June Leung (MBBS 2008, MPH 2012, MD 2017) will be reflecting on her career journey practising public health in Hong Kong and Aotearoa New Zealand. She will share her learnings about how colonisation and racism undermine health equity, and how the commercial determinants of health reinforce inequities, illustrated through the experiences of alcohol and tobacco control in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
