HKU-LSHTM Partnership Development Fund

Background

The HKU–LSHTM Partnership Development Fund ("HKU–LSHTM PDF") is a jointly developed and co-funded initiative between the LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). The Fund is established to seed early-stage, collaborative projects that bring together academics, researchers and students from both institutions. The ultimate goal is to develop sustained, scaled-up, longer-term partnerships and follow-on funding applications.

Eligibility
  1. The Lead Applicant from HKU should be Professoriate Staff, Research Assistant Professor, or Post-doctoral Fellow. The Lead Applicant from LSHTM may be either an academic member of staff or a professional services staff member.
  2. The Co-Applicant from the partner institution should follow that of the Lead Applicant of respective institutional listed above.
  3. Additional team members from either institution (e.g. students, other academic, research, or professional services staff) where relevant.
Award Value HKD 52,000 – 104,000*
* equivalent to GBP 5,000 – 10,000 at an exchange rate of 10.4 HKD to GBP in July 2026
Activity Period 1 November 2026 – 31 July 2027
Fund Use Funding is intended to support collaborative activities such as, but not limited to:
  1. Short-term research or scoping visits between HKUMed and LSHTM;
  2. Joint workshops, meetings, or networking activities; and
  3. Other activities that substantively involve and benefit both institutions.

Remarks: Other topical areas will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

a. Strength of Bilateral Collaboration (30%) The extent to which the proposal substantively engages both HKUMed and LSHTM, drawing on the complementary strengths of each institution, and demonstrates a genuinely joint approach to design and delivery.
b. Feasibility (25%) Appropriateness of the scope, activities, and timeline within the requested budget.
c. Impact (25%) Potential academic, policy, educational, or societal impact, including the likelihood that the collaboration will lead to further joint work and/or deepen the relationship between the two institutions in a meaningful and enduring way.
d. Alignment and Innovation (20%) Novelty and originality of the proposed collaboration or approach, and the extent to which the proposal reflects the strategic priorities and thematic focus areas of both institutions.

Application

Applicants Each application must include:
  • A Lead Applicant who will be responsible for leading the project and managing the funds. The Lead Applicant from HKU should be Professoriate, Research Assistant Professor, or Post-doctoral Fellow. The Lead Applicant from LSHTM may be either an academic member of staff or a professional services staff member.
  • A Co-Applicant from the partner institution, who will act as the primary collaborator and jointly contribute to the design and delivery of the project. Eligibility of Co-Applicant should follow that of the Lead Applicant of respective institutional listed above.
  • Additional team members from either institution (e.g. students, other academic, research, or professional services staff) where relevant.

*In case the appointment of the Lead Applicant cannot cover the whole activity period up to 31 July 2027, a Co-Lead Applicant whose appointment can cover the whole activity period should be listed.
