Description: 'One author's experience of developing a web-based textbook on public health, from enthusiastic initial conception to difficult parturition and typical parental concerns and lessons learned.'

About the speaker: Ian McDowell, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Community Medicine. He is also a honorary professor in the School of Public Health and a consultant in the FAMILY Cohort Study. His academic interests include health measurements (author of Measuring Health: a Guide to Rating Scales and Questionnaires, Oxford, New York, 2006), the epidemiology of cognitive impairments and dementia (principal investigator of the Canadian Study of Health and Aging, 1989-2006), and the manner in which social factors influence health. He coordinates the undergraduate medical curriculum component on Individual and Population Health, teaches two courses in the MSc programme in Epidemiology and one in the PhD programme in Population Health.
