Dr Tommy Lam won the Zhong Nanshan Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award

Dr Tommy Lam, Associate Professor of the School of Public Health of the University of Hong Kong, won the Zhong Nanshan Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award (鍾南山青年科技創新獎) for his contributions to scientific research and innovation. He was the first and only recipient from Hong Kong receiving the honour.

Dr Lam’s main research interest is the evolution, epidemiology and ecology of infectious diseases. His research has contributed to important understanding of the origins, evolution and transmission of newly emerging pathogens such as H7N9 influenza, MERS coronavirus and COVID-19 coronavirus. Established in 2020, this highly prestigious award aims to cultivate innovation and technology talents and foster innovative development in the areas of medical and life science. Nominated by Zhong Nanshan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and winner of the Medal of the Republic, the nation's highest honour, the award is bestowed upon no more than 10 Chinese young scientists under the age of 40 who demonstrate outstanding contributions in the fields of medicine and life science.
