Survey results reveal “Family Day” is welcomed by most Hong Kong people, let us celebrate together to promote family harmony

The FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society (“FAMILY Project”), a collaboration project between The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and the School of Public Health, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong will launch “Family Day 2016”, inviting citizens to celebrate this new festival together. “Family Day 2016” aims at promoting FAMILY Health, Happiness and Harmony (3Hs). It motivates Hong Kong people to spend more quality time with their family members, so as to enhance family harmony and relationship. The survey results of “Mother’s Day and Family Day Celebration in Hong Kong” are announced in the press conference.

Officiating guests and speakers include Ms. Imelda CHAN, Executive Manager, Charities, The Hong Kong Jockey Club; Professor LAM Tai Hing, BBS, JP, Chair Professor of Community Medicine, School of Public Health, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong; Sir Robert Kotewall Professor in Public Health; and Principal Investigator, FAMILY Project; Ms. Angie Lai, Service Head of Family Service, Caritas Hong Kong; and Mr. Kelvin Yau, Chairman of Institution of Dining Art.

“Family Day” is scheduled on the second Sunday after Mother’s Day, which is on 22 May this year. “Family Day 2016” is a large scale celebration comprising a series of events held from 22 April to 5 June. In collaboration with the business, academic, social welfare and health sectors in Hong Kong, the events are divided into 3 main themes, namely “Family Day @ Community”, “Family Day – Shopping Fun”, and “Active Families Sing for Family Day 2016 Fun Fair”. “Family Day 2016” Fun Fair will be held on “Family Day”, with a target of over 1,000 participants celebrating together.

Family Day @ Community

“Family Day @ Community” has commenced since 22 April 2016. In particular, “Family Day – Smile Collection” will be held in the community. Free family instant photo shooting service will be provided for people to capture the memorable moments spent with their family members. “Family Day – Family Photo and Video Online Sharing Competition” will be organized to echo with the use of social media in communicating with family members. All can join the competition to win attractive prizes by uploading original family photos and / or videos to the FAMILY Project’s Facebook page. Selected photos will be exhibited at the “Family Day – Photo Exhibition”. The goal of “Family Day @ Community” is to remind people to take more photos with their family members and enjoy the happy moments spent together, via different platforms. Furthermore, different workshops will be held to encourage people to design and make little gifts as an expression of love and gratitude to their family members.

Family Day – Shopping Fun

“Family Day – Shopping Fun” will last for 2 weeks starting 21 May, 2016 with the theme of “Clothing, Dining, Living, and Commuting”. It is supported by numerous retails and restaurants in Hong Kong. Different kinds of discounts, offers or rewards will be provided upon purchase at shops with the “Family Day” label (types and periods of offers vary with different merchants). The objective of the event is to encourage families to shop or dine together. Families can have more quality time to get along with each other, enhancing communication and relationship, as well as benefiting the retails and catering sectors. FAMILY Project has gained the support of over 300 retail outlets (as of 25 April).

“Active Families Sing for Family Day 2016” Fun Fair

“Active Families Sing for Family Day 2016 “Fun Fair” will be held at Kowloon Park on Family Day (22 May 2016). It is a large celebration event, with various family activities, including “1,000 Family Members Vibrant Singing” to break the Guinness World Record, “Zero Time Exercise” competitions, and game booths. “1,000 Family Members Vibrant Singing” will be the highlight of the event to gather a lot of families to make a new world record.

Mother’s Day and Family Day Celebration in Hong Kong

Professor LAM Tai Hing releases the survey results on Hong Kong people’s support of Mother’s Day and Family Day and their celebration patterns. The FAMILY Project commissioned Action Power, a non-profit organization, to conduct a survey from 1 to 22 April 2016. The organization successfully interviewed 513 Hong Kong residents aged 18 or above through random telephone and online survey.

Summary of Survey Results

• 97% Hong Kong people will celebrate this year’s Mother’s Day (8 May, 2016)
• 40% and 39% respectively will dine and shop with family members
• 51% will celebrate “Family Day” (22 May, 2016)
• 48% and 25% respectively will dine and shop to celebrate “Family Day”

The survey results show strong support of the “Family Day”. Therefore, the FAMILY Project encourages all people to celebrate the “Family Day”, 2 weeks after celebrating Mother’s Day. The slogan of the “Family Day 2016” is “Play, eat and celebrate together; Health, Happiness and Harmony forever”.

About FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society

To help build a more harmonious society, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust invited the School of Public Health, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong to collaboratively launch a project entitled “FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society” with a HK$250 million funding. The project aims to identify the sources of family problems, devise, implement and evaluate suitable preventive measures and promote FAMILY Health, Happiness and Harmony (3Hs) through a territory-wide prospective household survey, intervention projects and public education.
