Professor Gabriel Leung, Dean of LKS Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) and Professor George Gao, Director-General of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) today (June 14, 2019) to jointly nurture public health professionals and foster closer scientific exchange and cooperation on disease control and prevention and global health.

In response to the Chinese government’s initiative to groom global public health leaders and to developa public health cooperation network among the Belt and Road countries, HKUMed and China CDC target to jointly set up professional public health training programmes on disease control and prevention and global health leadership. Above and beyond the aspiration of nurturing public health leaders and research elites for China and the Belt and Road countries, both parties have also agreed to further strengthen scientific, technical and academic exchange and cooperation, where areas of infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, environment and health and public health policy will be covered.

Professor Leung extended a warm welcome to Professor Gao and expressed his delight at the establishment of the visionary collaboration. “HKUMed and China CDC have had a longstanding and fruitful partnership in advancing science, medicine and global public health initiatives. With our combined expertise and excellence in scientific research, disease control and other areas, this cooperation will help nurture public health leaders for the country.”

“This MoU between HKUMed and China CDC is a strong recognition of the Faculty’s efforts in enhancing local and international public health and scientific research advancement. It marks an important milestone in the history of our Faculty,” Professor Leung added.

Professor Gao said, “China has witnessed revolutionary advancement in public health over the past seven decades and plays an increasingly important role in global health amidst the backdrop of globalisation and the Belt and Road Initiative. It is China CDC’s hope that this partnership will attract and bring public health professionals together, and will contribute to facilitating cooperation between Hong Kong and mainland China on academic exchange, scientific research, and technology development. We are confident that our collaboration is going to nurture public health elites with global vision, superb leadership skills and cutting-edge knowledge, who will help bring China’s public health development to the next level of excellence.
